Your guide to Oktoberfest 2025 as an International Student

If you’re studying in Germany or elsewhere in Europe, chances are you’ve heard about Oktoberfest – the world’s largest folk festival and one of Germany’s most famous cultural events.

Originating in Munich over 200 years ago, Oktoberfest began as a royal wedding celebration and has since grown into a global cultural phenomenon. Each year, millions of people travel from around the world to experience the vibrant mix of Bavarian traditions, music, parades, food, and yes – the famous beer tents.

For 2025, Oktoberfest runs from September 20th to October 5th. And while Munich is the heart of the celebration, you’ll also find Oktoberfest events across Germany and in cities worldwide – including the UK!

But what if you don’t drink alcohol? Many international students, including those from the MENA region, want to experience German culture without the drinking culture attached. The good news? Oktoberfest is about so much more than beer.

Here’s how you can make the most of it:

1. Enjoy the Food

Oktoberfest is a foodie’s dream. From pretzels the size of your head to hearty sausages, roast chicken, potato pancakes, and apple strudel, there’s something for everyone. Most tents and stalls also offer non-alcoholic drinks like fruit juices, soft drinks, and non-alcoholic beer, so you can enjoy the flavours without the alcohol.

A Festival with Tradition

Oktoberfest has been celebrating in Munich for over 200 years. It celebrates Bavarian culture and tradition each year, with many events taking place all over the world.

Okteberfest traditional food includes pretzels, sausages, schnitzel, apple strudel and other delicious German treats.

2. Take Part in the Fun Atmosphere

Each tent has its own live music, with traditional Bavarian bands playing folk tunes and sing-along classics. There’s dancing, laughter, and a friendly atmosphere where everyone is welcome. You can join in the fun, clap along, and immerse yourself in the energy – no drinks required.

3. Admire the Costumes

One of the most exciting parts of Oktoberfest is seeing people dressed in traditional Bavarian attire. Many visitors rent or buy dirndls (for women) and lederhosen (for men) to join in the tradition. It’s a fun way to feel part of the festival and snap some amazing photos.

4. Explore the Fairground Rides and Parades

Oktoberfest isn’t just about tents – the festival grounds are packed with rides, games, and parades. There’s even a traditional costume parade through Munich on the first Sunday, showcasing Bavarian culture at its best.

5. Visit During the Day

If you want a quieter, family-friendly experience, visit in the mornings or early afternoons. These times are more relaxed, making it easier to explore, eat, and enjoy the music without big evening crowds.

6. Find Oktoberfest Events Beyond Munich

Can’t make it to Munich? Don’t worry. Many German cities – and even places across Europe like London – host their own Oktoberfest events. They often have the same fun vibe, music, food, and traditional costumes on a smaller scale.

7. Go with Friends

Oktoberfest is best enjoyed with friends. Whether you’re exploring the food stalls, listening to live music, or taking photos in front of the colourful tents, sharing the experience makes it unforgettable.

Experience German Culture Your Way

As an international student, Oktoberfest is a great opportunity to experience German culture without feeling pressured to drink alcohol. With food, music, costumes, parades, and plenty of non-alcoholic options, you can enjoy the festival on your own terms while making memories to last a lifetime.

So grab your friends, put on a dirndl or lederhosen, and get ready for an unforgettable cultural adventure this autumn!
